The Luftwaffe used an assortment of aircraft weapon types
during World War II. They were perpetually endeavoring to
maximise aircraft firepower against the wide assortment of
targets they had to deal with. Weapons fire used to bring
down a heavily armed four engine bomber was not the same as
that required to effectively deal with a fast and agile fighter
in a dog fight. German fighter armament options ranged from
rifle caliber light machine guns, to 30 mm cannons, mostly
configured as mixed arrays of cowl and wing mounted weapons.
and much later on air to air missiles.
