The 5. Räumbootsflottille was formed in August 1939 and was initially commanded by Walter Gemein, this flotilla was made up of the following 1930-33 Type, 1936-42 Type and 1937-43 Type R-boats and was deployed for minesweeping and security duties.

Some of 5. Räumbootsflottille was transferred to form the nucleus of 6. Räumbootsflottille.

The 5. Räumbootsflottille was deployed for minesweeping and security duties around the Gulf of Finland.

1941
The 5. Räumbootsflottille was deployed for minesweeping and security duties around the coastal waters of Northern Norway.
