Alfred Friedrich von Tirpitz was born at Kustrin, 19 March
1849 and educated at the gymnasium, Frankfort, entering the
Prussian navy, 24 April 1865. Alfred von Tirpitz was Prussian
minister of state in 1898 and thereafter devoted his energy
to the creation of a navy capable of challenging that of Great
Britain.
In 1903 Alfred von Tirpitz became grand admiral of
the German navy and head of the naval staff. Shortly after
the outbreak of the Great War Alfred von Tirpitz announced
the submarine campaign against the Allies, but in the end
disputes in Germany as to the real value of this campaign
brought about his fall in March 1916.
In his retirement Alfred
von Tirpitz was the active head of the Fatherland Party, which
was particularly hostile to Great Britain.
Alfred von Tirpitz
published My Memories, 1919 and died 6 March 1930.
