Events On This Day

On 10 February 1935, Benito Mussolini mobilised two divisions.

On the 23 February 1935, Benito Mussolini began to send large numbers of troops to Eritrea and Italian Somaliland. These were the Italian colonies that bordered Ethiopia to the Northeast and Southeast respectively. There was little international protest to this build-up.

The prototype Heinkel He 111 medium bomber made its maiden flight on 25 February 1935 with test pilot Gerhard Nitschke.

Adolf Hitler orders the Luftwaffe to be re-formed on 26 February 1935, breaching the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles, with Hermann Göring as its Commander-in-Chief. Walther Wever accepted the role of the Chief of Air Staff and Erhard Milch became the Secretary of State for Air. The autonomous branch started off with 1,888 aircraft and 20,000 men.

Robert Watson-Watt carries out a demonstration on 26th of February 1935 near Daventry which leads directly to the development of RADAR in the United Kingdom.
