On 2 November 1936, Italian and German bombers and their fighter escorts were attacked by Soviet aircraft, nicknamed Chatos by the Spanish, which resulted in some losses for the Italians.

Adolf Hitler on 5 November 1936 told his top lieutenants that the German aim in the Spanish Civil War was not entirely to aid the Spanish Nationalists, but rather, to prolong the conflict to occupy the attention of the United Kingdom and France, and to continue to widen the chasm between the United Kingdom and Italy.

On 15 November 1936, The German Condor Legion went into action for the first time, supporting further Nationalist operations to capture Madrid.

On 18 November 1936, Italy and Germany officially recognised General Franco's government in Spain. On the same day, Benito Mussolini authorised an Italian expeditionary corps to be sent to Spain.
