On 5 March 1939, The Spanish Civil War, The Republican Army led by the Colonel Segismundo Casado started a coup against the Negrín's government. Casado established a military junta, the Consejo Nacional de Defensa.

On 5 March 1939, The Spanish Civil War, The remaining Republican navy ships three cruisers, eight destroyers and one submarine flee to Bizerte where they are interned.

On 6 March 1939, The Spanish Civil War, The Republican government goes into exile in France.

On 7-11 March 1939, The Spanish Civil War, Fight in Madrid between the supporters of the Negrin's government led by the Colonel Luis Barceló and the supporters of Casado

Adolf Hitler on 13 March 1939, advises Jozef Tiso to declare Slovakia independence in order to prevent its partition by Hungary and Poland.

Wehrmacht ground forces occupy the remaining part of Bohemia and Moravia on 15 March 1939, Czechoslovakia ceases to exist. The Ruthenian region of Czechoslovakia declares independence as Carpatho-Ukraine.

On 17 March 1939, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain gives a speech in Birmingham, stating that Britain will oppose any effort at world domination on the part of Germany.

Adolf Hitler on 19 March 1939, sends a registered letter to the government of Lithuania stating that Germany intends to annex the port of Memel.

On 23 March 1939, it was announced that Memel had returned to Germany.

On 26-31 March 1939, The Spanish Civil War, Nationalist's Final offensive against the Spanish Republic. The Nationalists captured 150,000 republican soldiers.

On 28 March 1939, The Spanish Civil War, With the virtual disintegration of the Republican army, Dictator Francisco Franco assumes power in Madrid.

On 30 March 1939, The Spanish Civil War, The Nationalists occupied Valencia and the Italian troops Alicante.

On 31 March 1939, The Spanish Civil War, The Nationalists occupied Almeria, Murcia and Cartagena.

On 31 March 1939, Neville Chamberlain gives a speech in the House of Commons offering the British guarantee of the independence of Poland.
