Events On This Day

Running fights took place between British motor torpedo boats and German light naval forces, in which one Kriegsmarine ship was rammed. Admiralty announced that the mine-sweeping trawlers HMS Tamarisk and HMS Pyrope sank following air attack.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) carried out daylight operations over area extending from Jutland to Bay of Biscay, targets included aerodromes at Waalhaven, Hingene, Caen, Cherbourg, Morlaix, and seaplane base at Brest. Twelve aircraft did not return. During night large force of British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers seriously damaged Caproni aircraft works at Milan and Fiat plant at Turin. Other bombers attacked Junkers factories at Dessau, 60 miles South West of Berlin, and at Bernburg, munition works at Luenen and Grevenbroich, military targets inf the Ruhr, and 14 aerodromes in Germany, Holland, Belgium and France.

Italian attacks on Jugargan positions, Somaliland, renewed but with scant success. Column advancing along coast road from Zeila engaged by. British aircraft and gunfire from HMS ships. Engagements in Gallabat area, Sudan resulted in withdrawal of Italian forces with considerable losses.

All day air battle along South Coast. Seventy-eight Luftwaffe aircraft shot down. Thirteen British fighters lost, but pilots of ten reported to be safe. Mass attacks made on Southampton. Bombs dropped in Isle of Wightand country districts of Berks, Hants and Wilts. Several British Royal Air Force (RAF) aerodromes in Southeast England attacked.
