Events On This Day

Western front reported mutual artillery action in the region west of the Saar.

The Russians retreated nearly 30 miles on the Salla front, reaching the vicinity of Maerkaejaervi. Finnish communique announced that it 11 Russian bombers had been brought down.

Dutch royal decree proclaimed state of siege in several coastal areas.

Berlin and announced the rescue of four officers and 26 men of the three submarines lost in Heligoland Bight.

The crew of the British steamer Cairnross was mined off the west coast of England on 17 January 1940, were landed.

Eight of the crew of the Norwegian steamer Enid, which was shelved and torpedoed by U-boat on 17 January 1940 reached port.

The Swedish steamers Flandria and Foxen were sunk by mines off Ymuiden.

It was reported that the Norwegian steamer Fagerheim had been sunk in the Bay of Biscay on 14 January 1940 and that, the Greek steamer Asteria had been mined in the North see on 17 January 1940.

The Danish steamer Canadian Reefer was torpedoed off north-west Spain.

The German steamer August Thyssen, sailing without pilot was sunk by a Swedish mine of Stockholm.

Explosion in Royal gunpowder factory, Waltham abbey, with a loss of five lives.
