Events On This Day

It was announced that the British Royal Air Force (RAF) sank two U-boats in Mediterranean in July. During night of 1-2 August 1940 British steamer HMS Highlander fought battle with Luftwaffe aircraft in the North Sea and destroyed two. Luftwaffe planes attacking a convoy in North Sea was shot down by escorting vessel HMS Weston. Irish steamer HMS Kerry Head attacked by German bomber off Co. Cork.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombed aerodromes at Dortmund, Leeuwarden and Haamstede, Krupps works at Essen, oil refineries and other targets in North West Germany.

Coastal Command aircraft dropped bombs on enemy aerodrome at Cherbourg. Fleet Air Arm bombed German radio station and supply ship off Norwegian coast.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombed ammunition dump at Bardia, Libya, oil refinery near Massawa and hangars at Asmara.

Two Luftwaffe aircraft shot down in Channel. Single raider dropped bombs on Norwich, causing five civilian deaths and some damage. During preceding night bombs were dropped in neighbourhood of Thames Estuary and Bristol Channel.

Stated that Japan had released seven of thirteen arrested Britons.

M. Molotov reaffirmed Russia’s neutrality.
