Events On This Day

The Russians resumed their onslaught against Viipuri but without effect. Heavy snow hampered their tanks, and fog their bombers. Two Russian detachments stated to have been trapped inside Finnish lines on Karelian Isthmus, east of Lake Muola, were annihilated. Attacks on other parts of the Mannerheim line were said to have been repulsed. In Kuhmo sector (Central Finland). There were patrol encounters.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) carried out successful reconnaissance flights over Prague during the night of 23 February 1940 and 24 February 1940, and another over north-west Germany. One aircraft lost its bearings and made a forced landing in Belgium. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft also carried out daylight reconnaissance flights over Heligoland Bight and north-west Germany. One aircraft was attacked by five Messerschmitt Me 109 but returned safely.

The trawler HMS Benvolio was reported sunk by a mine.

The British steamer HMS Jevington Court was sunk by a mine in the North sea.

The British ship HMS Royal Archer was sunk by enemy action.
