Events On This Day

Great battle in region of Courtrai still raging, violent and continuous German attacks being made on 25 mile front with infantry and artillery.

British front in Belgium remained intact. Help was given to both Belgium and French forces on its flanks.

French forces retired from advanced positions at Valenciennes after repulsing heavy German attacks.

Belgium's at Courtrai gave ground towards Menin.

British troops at Aire, 10 miles southeast of St Omer, successfully attacked flank of German motorised troops making for Calais.

East of the Aisne Germans attacked persistently with infantry and artillery. French positions were maintained.

During the night of 26-27 May 1940, the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers attacked Luftwaffe aerodromes at Flushing, Antwerp, Brussels and elsewhere.

American hospital at Ostend, bombed by the Luftwaffe, or doctors, nurses, 200 wounded civilians and a number of refugees said to have been killed.

Curfew instituted as defence measures in Gibraltar and Malta.
