Shelling of steamer British Commander by unknown vessel in Indian Ocean was reported by a New York wireless station, Finnish steamer Elle sunk by U-boat off the west coast of Ireland.

During the night the British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavily bombed targets in Berlin. Other squadrons attacked airframe factory at Leipzig, Junkers works at Dessau, oil-plants at Reisholz, Dortmund and Nordenham and several aerodromes.

Skua aircraft of Fleet Air Arm successfully attacked oil depots, motor patrol vessel and supply ship along Norwegian coast.

Heavy air attacks over Kent coast and Thames estuary. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters and antiaircraft batteries split up raiding, formations and series of fights took place at high altitudes. Few bombs dropped.

Night raid on London. Parachute flares and incendiary bombs dropped. Some damage done and casualties caused. Many towns in South east, Midlands, South West coast and North West coast also raided.

Twenty-nine Luftwaffe aircraft shot down. Fourteen British machines lost, but pilots of seven safe.

It was announced that Adolf Hitler had summoned Foreign Ministers of Hungary and Rumania to conference in Vienna on Transylvanian dispute.
