Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced that HMS destroyer Defender had been sunk. Day attacks on enemy shipping.

Russian Front, The Wehrmacht advanced nearer Kiev and threatened to turn the line of the Dniester, In north, Kexholm still in Russian hands and Karelian defences on broken Soviet aircraft bombed Berlin by night. Moscow raided by Luftwaffe planes, five of which were destroyed.

In Africa, Post on outer perimeter of Tobruk routed Italian troops attacking by night. On night of 9-10 August 1941 the British Royal Air Force (RAF) attacked Bardia and Gazala.

During the night Luftwaffe bombs fell at a point in Scotland.

The Queen broadcast to the women of America.
