The British Admiralty announced that the HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse were
sunk off the coast of Malaya. Japanese battleship Haruna sunk off Philippines,
Japanese cruiser and destroyer reported sunk off Wake Island. Light raids on objectives
in North West Germany. V
Russian Front, Moscow announced the recapture
of Yelets, in the Don battle area. More local successes for the Russians in both
the Moscow and Leningrad sectors.
In Africa, Mobile forces attacked
Afrika Corps formations moving North West and West from El Adem.
Far East, Mass attacks against island of Luzon, in Philippines. Landings
at Aparri, Vigan and Lingayen. The Japanese attempted new landing at Kuantan,
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, P-40 fighters, and P-35 fighters attack a
convoy landing troops and equipment at Vigan and at Aparri in North Luzon. 1 transport
at Vigan is destroyed. The strikes include the much publicised attack of Capt.
Colin P Kelly Jr (14th Bomber Squadron) on a warship off Aparri. Capt. Kelly,
who is killed when his B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers is shot down by fighters
as he is returning to Clark Field, is later posthumously awarded the DSC for destroying
a battleship. However, later information reveals that he attacked the heavy cruiser
Ashigara, probably scoring near misses. Go To: 11th
