Events On This Day

Night attacks on Duisburg and other parts of the Ruhr.

Russian Front, Moscow communique referred to heavy fighting in northern and central zones. Oil refineries at Ploesti bombed by Soviet aircraft. Unofficial Wehrmacht announcement that troops had reached Kiev.

In Africa, Cairo stated that offensive patrols had been active at Tobruk capturing prisoners and inflicting casualties. Seven Luftwaffe aircraft shot down off Libyan coast.

Near East, Allied troops formally occupied Beirut.
