Events On This Day

Adolf Hitler becomes Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Wehrmacht Armed Forces on 19 December 1941.

Russian Front. Russians recaptured more towns and villages on Moscow front, including Ruza, Terusa and Kanino.

In Africa. Derna airfield in Libya captured by British. Derna and Mekili occupied without opposition. Forward mechanised patrols reach a point 25 miles West of Giovanni Berta.

Far East. Penang evacuated by British troops. Further British withdrawal on mainland of Malaya. Japanese claimed to have captured most of Hong Kong. Further land and air activity in the Philippines.

Zone of Interior. First Air Force is assigned to Eastern Theater of Operations (later Eastern Defence Command).
