Events On This Day

Russian Front, Volokolamsk recaptured by Soviet troops and at least two Wehrmacht divisions routed near southern shores of Lake Ladoga. Three Kriegsmarine transports sunk by Soviet submarine.

In Africa, Imperial forces in full pursuit of Erwin Rommel's broken columns in Libya.

Far East, Japanese troops landed in force on island of Mindanao, mainly at Davao. At Hong Kong, Imperial forces still holding out.

Few Luftwaffe bombs were dropped by raiders during the night at scattered points.

Washington announced that Admiral Ernest J King, commander of the United States Atlantic Fleet, had been appointed Commander of the Combined United States Fleets.
