The British Admiralty announced that the British Royal Navy intercepted, Kriegsmarine naval forces of Greenland in the north Atlantic, on evening of 23 May 1941. At 6 am, 24 May 1941, the British battleship HMS Prince of Wales and the battlecruiser HMS Hood open fire on the Kriegsmarine battleship Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. After exchanging fire, the HMS Hood magazines explodes and splits the ship in two killing all but 3 crewmen from a total of 1,418 aboard. HMS Prince of Wales is hit several times, The Bismarck and Prinz Eugen head for Brest, France. Kriegsmarine battleship Bismarck damaged by Fleet Air Arm torpedo. British continued pursuit. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) attacked enemy shipping off Dutch coast.

In Africa, Enemy troops and fort at Goangw in Gonclar area, heavily bombed.

Near East, More airborne German troops landed in Crete. Hand-to-hand fighting between Maleme and Canea, During night of 23-24 May 1941 the British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavily bombed enemy positions and aerodromes at Maleme. Mass bombing by Germans of Canea, Retimo and Heraklion. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) attacked Luftwaffe aircraft on aerodrome at Aleppo.

In Iraq, The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombed insurgent positions at Qurrnet Ali.

Luftwaffe night raid on West Country town.

General Smuts appointed Field Marshal.
