Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced that 14 merchant ships out of British convoy of 21 attacked for four days by U-boats and aircraft had arrived in the Tagus. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) made heavy night raids on Mannheim and Karlsruhe.

Russian Front, In the south Russians continued fighting retreat to Dnieper. Fierce battle near Dniepropetrovsk. Wehrmacht operations against Leningrad-Moscow railway held in check, but Germans claimed that Leningrad was now under artillery fire.

In Iran, British and Russian forces crossed frontier. Imperial troops occupied Abadan and Bandar Shapur on Persian Gull. At latter, seven Axis ships were captured. Other forces advanced from Khanikin and occupied Qasr-i-Shirin and Naft-i-Shah. Russians advanced towards Tabriz and Ardebil.
