Events On This Day

Offensive operation by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) over North France. Coastal Command attacked Kriegsmarine convoy off Norway. Armed enemy merchant vessel bombed off Cherbourg. Night attacks on Stettin, Hamburg and Cherbourg.

Russian Front,Russians claimed 15 villages recaptured in one day in sorties from Odessa. The Wehrmacht drive against Kharkov developed. Russians admitted loss of Poltava.

Fairly sharp Luftwaffe night attack on Northeast coastal district., One Luftwaffe aircraft destroyed. The British Air Ministry announced 600 Luftwaffe planes were destroyed by antiaircraft fire over Gt. Britain since war began.

In Czechoslovakia, 256 Czechs arrested in the Reinhard Heydrich terror drive. 844 people arrested in Bulgarian port of Varna.
