Events On This Day

The British Coastal Command attacked enemy shipping of the Dutch coast. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) carried out offensive sweeps over North France by Fighter Command.

Russian Front, Russians claimed recapture of Tikhvin, in Leningrad sector. Russians continued to advance on South Front.

In Africa, El Adem captured by British and Tobruk relieved. Enemy retirement Westward accelerated. Tripoli attacked by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) at night landing grounds at Derna and Gazala attacked.

Far East, Bitter fighting for aerodrome of Kota Bharu, in Northeast Malaya.

Luftwaffe Junkers Ju 88 dive bomber shot down in daylight off Northeast coast.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). Shortly after 0300 aircraft attack Nichols Field. This attack, added to the previous day's raids on Clark and Iba Fields, leaves Far East Air Force (FEAF) United States strength reduced by half. Only 17 of 35 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers remain in commission; about 55 P-40 fighters,3 P-35 fighters, and close to 30 other aircraft (B-10 bombers, B-18 Bolo medium bomber,and observation aeroplanes) have been lost in aerial combat or destroyed on the ground. During morning and afternoon, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers from Mindanao fly reconnaissance missions and land on Clark and San Marcelino Fields. Several more B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers are flown from Mindanao to these Luzon bases for resistance against possible invasion attempt.

Zone of Interior. Fighters at Mitchel Field are dispatched to intercept hostile aeroplane reported (falsely) to be approaching the East coast.

Remainder of the British Empire declared war against Japan, as did Cuba and Panama.
