Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the sinking of the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes by Japanese air attack off Ceylon. British submarine sunk two enemy supply ships in Mediterranean. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made night raid on Ruhr, and also attacked docks at Le Havre.

In the Mediterranean, Two more heavy air raids on Malta.

In Africa, Clashes between advanced units in Cyrenaica.

In Burma, Japanese launched three pronged drive from Toungoo.

In the Philippines. Washington announced sinking of a Japanese cruiser off Cebu by United States torpedo boat. United States submarine sunk armed Japanese ship near the Celebes.

In Australasia. Japanese claimed occupation of Christmas Island. Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) raided Koepang, Dutch Timor. Japanese raided Port Moresby.
