Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the loss of minesweeper HMS Cromer which was sunk after hitting a mine on 9 November 1942, Greek submarine RHS Triton also lost on 16 November 1942 after being attacked and sunk by the Kriegsmarine auxiliary submarine chaser UJ-2102.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers again carried out extensive raids on Turin and surrounding areas during the night.

North Africa. Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps ground forces carried on intensive assaults around Tunisia however allied forces repulsed all attacks.

In Libya. Nofilia landing ground, West of El Agheila, attacked by allied aircraft.

In the Mediterranean. Naples raided by United States of America bomber aircraft by day and by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers at night, Palermo docks also bombed.

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht ground forces counter-attacks between Don and Volga thrown back by valiant Russian defenders.

In the Indian Ocean. United States of America bombers renewed their attacks on Rangoon docks and on Port Blair, Andaman Islands.

In Australasia. United States of America dive-bombers hit five out of 11 Japanese surface destroyers heading for Guadalcanal.

United States of America. United States bombers attacked Japanese surface shipping at Kiska, Aleutians.

Twelfth Air Force. Twelfth Air Force creates 5 area commands covering North West Africa from West coast of Morocco to East coast of Tunisia. From West to East these are, Moroccan Composite Wing (Colonel Rosenham R Beam); West Algerian Composite Wing (Colonel Lawrence P Hickey), C Algerian Composite Wing (Colonel Paul L Williams), XII Bomber Command (Colonel Charles T Phillips); and XII Fighter Command (General Blackburn). General Cannon becomes overall Commander of the 2 wings in Algeria. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers with fighters escort, attack rail bridge at La Hencha. P-38 Lightning fighters fly sea patrol off North coast and over Gulf of Tunis and reconnaissance over Sousse region. Spitfires sweep over Medjez el Bab, and Bone.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb harbour and surrounding areas at Naples with good results. P-40 fighters fly several fighter-bomber mission and sweeps over battle area in preparation for ground assault on El Agheila which General Montgomery schedules for 14 December 1942.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers of India Air Task Force (IATF) attack shipping at Port Blair, with negative results.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb airfields and target in Buna area. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit airfields at Lae.

Eleventh Air Force. Uneventful reconnaissance cover Attu, Agattu, Amchitka, Kiska, and the Semichis. 3 B-26 Marauder medium bombers and 4 P-38 Lightning fighters re bomb and strafe previously bombed cargo vessel in Kiska Harbour, scoring 2 more direct hits. The P-38 Lightning fighters also strafe and bomb Kiska Harbour submarine base and seaplane hangars, camp area, and nearby gun emplacements.
