The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out a major daylight attack on Hanover and surrounding areas.

Russian Front. At Stalingrad Wehrmacht tanks and infantry showed no activity. The rest of the Russian front remained stable

In the Mediterranean. At least l5 enemy aircraft shot down in attacks on Malta.

In Australasia. United States of America cruisers and destroyers engaged Japanese surface warships off Solomons, sinking one heavy cruiser, four destroyers and a transport, and damaging a cruiser and destroyer.

The Luftwaffe carried out a small but intensive raid on North East coast of England.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack convoy in the Mediterranean, hitting 1 vessel and claiming 1 fighters shot down.

South Pacific (SOPAC).United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers sight Task Force of cruisers and destroyers bearing down on Guadalcanal in the afternoon. During 11-12 October 1942, in the Battle of Cape Esperance, Admiral Scott's cruisers drive away the vessels. Search has been and continues to be the most useful service of the B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers in South Pacific (SOPAC).

Eleventh Air Force. Kiska is hit by 3 bombing and strafing missions flown by 10 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 3 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers. The B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers make no contact. The B-24 Liberator heavy bombers blast harbour targets and Main Camp.
