Events On This Day

Russian Front. Evacuation of Novorossisk announced by Russians. Round Stalingrad the Russians held their ground, and on the central and northern fronts continued to make progress.

In the Indian Ocean. Our columns made progress inland from west coast of Madagascar.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters fly uneventful sweep with The British Royal Air Force (RAF) during lull after Battle of Alam-el-Halfa.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers and B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit Efogi and Menari in the Owen Stanley Range and airfield at Buna. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, along with Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Hudsons, attack 2 destroyers 20 miles East of Normanby Island. A B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers scores a direct hit on stern of the destroyer Yayoi, which later sinks.

South Pacific (SOPAC). Island combat control groups are authorised for New Caledonia and Fiji. These units, under immediate control of Commanding General of United States Army Forces in the South Pacific (COMGENSOPAC), are to take over local operational direction of fighters aircraft and all other units in the island combat team.

Eleventh Air Force. 343d Fighter Group, constituted on 3 September 1942, is activated on this day and immediately begins to operate. It is composed of the 11th, 18th, 54th, and, ax of 10 October 1942, 344th Fighter Squadrons. A weather, photo, and patrol aircraft draw antiaircraft fire over Chichagof Harbour and also covers Tanaga, Amchitka, and Semichi.
