Free French Headquarters announced the loss of submarine chaser Reine.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers again carried out extensive bombing of Mainz. United States of America` Army Air Force fighters took part in sorties over English Channel,

Russian Front. Caucasus fighting continued round Maikop and Krasnodar, Russians withdrew in Cherkessk region. The Wehrmacht attacks held round Stalingrad.

In the Mediterranean. During passage of convoy to Malta HMS Manchester (cruiser) was damaged by torpedo from Italian Motor Torpedo Boats, and subsequently sank. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers attacked aerodrome at Calato, Rhodes.

In Africa. Allied bombers attacked Tobruk and Sollum.

In Australasia. United States of America Marines consolidating their positions in three islands in vicinity of Tulagi.

Mr. Churchill and British Chiefs of Staff, along with Harriman of United States, arrive in Moscow for conference with Stalin. Stalin is told about plan for TORCH. Talks, which end on 16 August 1942, also include discussion of Second Front in Europe.

Eighth Air Force. 31st Fighter Group at Westhampnett is declared fully operational and ready for combat operations under The British Royal Air Force (RAF) control until it gains enough experience to be able to fight as a group. This is first United States fighters unit in United Kingdom to reach this operational status.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb shipping at Rabaul, scoring damaging hits on 3 vessels.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flies photo reconnaissance over Amlia and Atka.
