Events On This Day

United States of America. Navy Department. Announced sinking by mine of liner SS President Coolidge which was sunk on 26 of October 1942 after striking a mine, transport in South Pacific.

United States of America bombers and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters attacked Rouen 23 Luftwaffe fighters destroyed.

North Africa. Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps attempts to infiltrate North and South of Mejez-el-Bab stopped. Tunis docks bombed by United States of America Flying Fortresses.

In Libya. Allied forward troops continued to probe enemy defences before El Agheila. Tripoli raided by our bombers.

In the Mediterranean. Palermo harbour raided by The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Blenheim bombers attacked Mandalay.

In Australasia. United States of America surface warships engaged Japanese surface destroyers heading for Guadalcanal and sank or damaged three.

The Luftwaffe carried out an intensive raid on Northeast coastal area of England.

German prisoners in Britain and Canada unshackled following Swiss Governments appeal to Britain and Germany.

Eighth Air Force. 17 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers bomb Rouen-Sotteville marshalling yard. Bad weather prevents large attack planned for air installations at Romilly-sur-Seine.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters escort, bomb rail facilities and harbour area at Tunis. B-26 Marauder medium bombers on mission to bomb at Sousse or La Hencha abort due to very bad weather. P-38 Lightning fighters and P-40 fighters fly widespread reconnaissance operations.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters fly sweeps and attack ground forces in El Agheila and Brega area. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators, under IX Bomber Command operational control, attack dock area at Naples.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers strafe barges off Sanananda Point while B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb airfields at Lae and Salamaua.

South Pacific (SOPAC). United States heavy bombers begin series of daily attacks on Japanese airfields nearing completion at Munda.

Eleventh Air Force. Attempted photo reconnaissance over Kiska by a B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 2 P-38 Lightning fighters returns without result due to weather. Another reconnaissance B-24 Liberator heavy bombers is turned back by a weather front West of Buldir Island.
