United States of America. Navy Department. Announced the loss of heavy cruisers USS Quincy, USS Vincennes and USS Astoria on 9 August 1942 in naval battle off Solomons.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out raids against industrial targets in Northern Germany by night.

Russian Front. Comparative lull at Stalingrad broken by one Wehrmacht infantry attack which was repelled by the valiant Russian defenders.

In the Mediterranean. In renewed raids on Malta 24 enemy aircraft destroyed.

In Australasia. Japanese air force bomb Guadalcanal airfield United States of America reinforcements landed.

Eighth Air Force. VIII Fighter Command is made responsible for preparation and movement of air echelons of Twelfth Air Force from United Kingdom to North Africa.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). Bomber Command United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF) is organised at Cairo with Colonel Patrick W Timberlake as Commanding Officer. This step comes about as part of a move to preserve Arnold-Portal-Towers agreement that United States combat units in theatres of British strategic responsibility are to be organised in homogeneous American formations and under strategic control only of a British commander-in-chief. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit shipping at Tobruk harbour.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers hit village of Isivita and targets on trail near Wairopi. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Buna, Wairopi bridge, and targets along Buna-Kokoda trail.

South Pacific (SOPAC). 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb installations at Buka.

Eleventh Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers abort bombing of Kiska due to overcast and instead fly shipping search West of Attu.
