Events On This Day

Russian Front. Russians withdrew in sector South West of Stalingrad due to increased pressure from the Wehrmacht forces.

In Africa, Large force of bombers of South African Air Force (SAAF) attacked landing grounds east of Mersa Matruh,

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force heavy bombers carried out intensive raids on Mandalay and Rangoon and surrounding areas.

In Australasia. Japanese forces launched large-scale air and sea attacks on United States of America positions at Guadalcanal in the Solomons.

Eighth Air Force. Headquarters VIII Air Force Composite Command arrives in Northern Ireland and is temporarily stationed at Long Kesh. Headquarters 3d Bomber Wing arrives in United Kingdom and is established at Elveden Hall. Headquarters 4th Bomber Wing is established at High Wycombe but soon loses its personnel to XII Bomber Command and is not manned again until January 1943. 4th Fighter Group is activated in United Kingdom to be manned by United States pilots who formerly flew with The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Eagle Squadrons.

Twelfth Air Force. Headquarters of Twelfth Air Force, XII Fighter Command and XII Air Force Services Command arrive in United Kingdom.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters fly 3 uneventful scramble missions along front-lines.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-400 fighters, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, A-20 Havoc light bombers, and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb airfields and strafe barges at Buna. P-40 fighters strafe Gadaibai on Goodenough Island. A B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers strafes vessel in Bismarck Sea South of Kavieng.

Eleventh Air Force. A weather and patrol reconnaissance aircraft finds overcast at Kiska but takes photos over Tanaga, Kanaga, and Attu. The runway at Adak is completed.
