Events On This Day

Russian warships sank enemy submarine in Gulf of Finland and three transports in the Barents Sea.

United States of America Army Air Force fighter squadrons again took part in operations over the Channel and Northern France.

Russian Front. Fighting in Caucasus spread to Mineralniye Vody, East of Armavir. At Kotelnikovo the Russians counter-attacked.

In the Mediterranean. British naval squadron under Admiral Vian shelled Rhodes.

In Australasia. Allied bombers made daylight attacks on Japanese convoy off New Guinea.

Fifth Air Force. Convoy, headed toward Basabua near Gona, with 3,000 construction troops, is attacked first by B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers 76 miles Northeast of Gona, followed by B-26 Marauder medium bombers 20-25 miles North of Gona, and another B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack as the convoy approaches landing position. Japanese ground forces attack at Deniki, driving Allied forces back about 5 miles and firmly securing Buna-Kokoda trail.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 B-24 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Liberator heavy bombers flies photo reconnaissance over Kiska.
