Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Lancaster and Stirlings bombers carried out extensive raids on Genoa and surrounding areas, by night without loss.

North Africa. Eastern Task Force under General Anderson occupied Bone.

In Libya. Tobruk again in British hands, Sollum and Bardia also occupied.

Russian Front. Many Wehrmacht ground Force attacks repelled at Stalingrad by valiant Russian defenders.

Australasia. Off Guadalcanal Japanese surface fleet tried to cover large-scale landing of reinforcements.

Eighth Air Force. Headquarters VIII Air Force Composite Command
moves from temporary station at Long Kesh to Kirkassock House, Northern Ireland.

Ninth Air Force. 98th Bomber Group arrives in Egypt from Palestine. Tobruk falls to 10 Corps, British Eighth Army.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft, with P-38 Lightning fighters escort, fly antiaircraft guns and aviation gasoline to Duzerville airfield. United States Spitfires patrol Oran-Tafaraoui area.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb shipping off Tonolai-Komaleai Point and airfield at Kahili. A B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers strafes a schooner in Lorengau harbour on Manus Island.

South Pacific (SOPAC). Air strength at Guadalcanal is raised by arrival of 3 B-26 Marauder medium bombers of 69th and 70th Bomber Squadrons from New Hebrides as naval battle of Guadalcanal continues. Japanese cruisers and destroyers bombard Henderson Field during 13-14 November 1942, and destroy one of the new P-38 Lightning fighters.

Eleventh Air Force. Reconnaissance over Attu and Agattu reveals 5 landing barges in Chichagof harbour.
