Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out a heavy raid on Bremen and surrounding area, while Soviet air force bombers carried out attacks on the following areas Bucharest and Ploesti.

Russian Front. Russians held all their positions West and Southwest of Stalingrad. On Barents Sea coast Soviet Marines made a Commando landing.

In China. Chinese forces recaptured Kufang on the Chekiang-Kiangsi railway.

In Australasia. Japanese air force bombers made heavy attacks on airfield at Guadalcanal. During the night of 13-14 September 1942. United States of America positions were shelled by Japanese surface craft.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). During 13-14 September 1942, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Tobruk and shipping in Bengasi harbour while B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit landing grounds Southeast of Matruh.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers pound airfield at Lae. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers unsuccessfully attack cruiser Southeast of Rabaul. P-40 fighters strafe buildings on Goodenough Island.

Eleventh Air Force. 14 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers of the 21st and 404th Bomber Squadrons move up to Adak. 1 LB-30 bombers and 2 P-38 Lightning fighters fly photo reconnaissance, antisubmarine coverage and strafing mission over Kiska lakes and harbour. A tender in harbour is slightly damaged, 1 float fighters is downed. A P-38 Lightning fighters is hit by antiaircraft fire and fighters damage the LB-30 bombers.
