Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced loss of the submarine HMS Olympus on 8 May 1942 after hitting a mine off the coast of Malta most of the crew and passengers were lost only nine survivors. The wreck of HMS Olympus during 2011.

Russian Front. Fighting continued in Kharkov and Sebastopol sectors.

In the Mediterranean. Convoy from, Alexandria bound for Malta encountered 2 Italian battleships, 4 cruisers and 8 destroyers.

In Africa. Troops round Acroma and 1st,. Armoured Division covered withdrawal from Gazzala of Ist South African Division and 50th Division.

In China. The Japanese from Chekiang occupied Yushan in Kiangsi.

In Australasia. Japanese bombers and fighters intercepted off Darwin. Allied bombers raided Sohana in Solomons.

Four United States Army Air Force (USAAF) bombers made forced landing in Turkey.

Army Air Forces. Aircraft program for Army Air Forces in United Kingdom is revised downward from 3,649 to 3,266, and date of anticipated final strength is advanced 1 month to 1 April 1943.

Eleventh Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and 3 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb shipping in Kiska Harbour from an altitude of 700 ft, lowest altitude yet. 2 cruisers are hit and one scout seaplane is downed. 2 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers are heavily damaged but return to base. Japanese bomb Nazan Bay, Atka.
