Events On This Day

Two enemy armed crawlers left sinking after engagement off French coast.

Russian Front. On Kerch Peninsula Russians made further withdrawal. In Kharkov sector they continued to advance.

In Africa. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made night attacks on objectives in Libya.

In the Mediterranean. Eleven enemy aircraft destroyed and ten damaged over Malta.

In Burma. United States of America bombers made daylight raid on Myitkyina.

In Australasia. Enemy aircraft twice raided Port Moresby. Allied bombers attacked Japanese shipping at Rabaul and seaplane base on Deboyne Island. Emergency regulations applied to certain districts of Queensland.

Small-scale Luftwaffe attack on South West coast of England.

Eighth Air Force. General Eaker designated commander of Detachment Headquarters Eighth Air Force in addition to his duties as Commanding General VIII Bomber Command. General Hunter assumes command of VIII Interceptor Command.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers pound Myitkyina for second time, scoring direct hits on runways and several buildings.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack Rabaul and Lae.
