Events On This Day

North Africa. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out extensive raids on the following areas Sfax, Susa, Bizerta, Tunis, and La Goulette.

In Libya. Eighth Army, hindered by mines continued pursuit of Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps ground forces West of El Agheila.

Russian Front. The Wehrmacht ground forces advance was halted South West of Stalingrad by extremely stubborn Russian defence.

In India. Two Japanese raids on Chittagong.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers attack El Aouina airfield while B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb harbour area. Other B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit harbour at Bizerte. F4U Corsair fighter fly several photo reconnaissance missions over coastal Tunisia covering area from Bizerte to Gabes, fighters fly routine patrols, and C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft carry out numerous courier and transport missions in North West Africa.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, opening Ninth Air Force offensive against Tunisian ports, hit railroad yard, repair shop, and roundhouse at Sfax. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, operationally controlled by IX Bomber Command, hit Naples harbour during 15-16 December 1942. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and P-40 fighters strike at retreating troops and vehicles between El Agheila and Merduma, as 2d New Zealand Division drives to coast in Merduma area to obstruct the retreating forces.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers hit forces along Mambare River while a B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bombs wrecked ship at Gona.
