Events On This Day

Washington announced the sinking on 12 May 1942 of cargo boat near mouth of Mississippi.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) attacked three German minesweepers off Cherbourg. Coastal Command made low-level night attacks on two German convoys off Frisian Islands.

Russian Front. Extremely stubborn fighting continued across Kerch Peninsula; further Russian advance in Kharkov sector.

In Burma. Aerodrome at Akyab bombed by the British Royal Air Force (RAF).

In China. Japanese entered Tengueh in Yunnan.

Slight Luftwaffe activity off East and South West coasts of England, two Luftwaffe bombers shot down.

Army Air Forces. Interceptor and pursuit organisations of Army Air Forces are redesignated fighter.
