Russian Front. The Wehrmacht assault on Stalingrad reaching its height, with massed Luftwaffe air attacks.

In the Mediterranean. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers attacked docks at Heraklion, Crete.

It was announced, that Canadian casualties in Dieppe raid of 13 August 1942 totalled 3,350 killed, wounded and missing.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). 57th Group is first fighters group to arrive in Egypt from Palestine. A lone B-24 Liberator heavy bombers drops 1 bomb on tanker in Suda Bay. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb behind enemy lines while P-40 fighters, along with The British Royal Air Force (RAF), fly escort and carry out scramble missions over area West of El Alamein.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers hit Buna and Sanananda and attack camps at Efogi and Myola. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb harbour and airfield at Rabaul. First United States infantry troops, elements of 32d Division, arrive at Port Moresby.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly armed reconnaissance over Kiska, and at Amchitka blast buildings in Constantine Harbour area. Fighters strafe Kiska Camp area and down 4 intercepting aircraft.
