Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 35 United States of America Flying Fortresses and Liberators bombers carried out substantial raids on submarine base at St. Nazaire with 102 tons of bombs.

North Africa. Allied bombers from Libya raided Tunis aerodrome nine enemy aircraft destroyed in attacks on our forces between Bone and Tunisian border.

In Libya. It was announced that Allied troops had occupied Derna and Mekili.

Russian Front. Soviet forces on defensive at Stalingrad, but attacked Southeast of Nalchik.

In Australasia. It was announced that General MacArthur had taken the field in New Guinea.

Twelfth Air Force. Air action is limited to routine patrols in Tafaraoui area.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40s patrol over Tobruk and Derna road.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit Gona Mission as United States 32d and Australian 7th Divisions continue to move toward Buna-Gona beachhead. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb airfields at Lae and Gasmata. A lone B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bombs wharf area at Rabaul.

Eleventh Air Force. Weather reconnaissance aircraft is forced back by weather West of Kiska. Bombers are on alert to attack surface vessels.
