Events On This Day

North Africa. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out extensive attacks on the following docks at Bizerta, Tunis and La Goulette.

In Libya. Field Marshall Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps forces evacuated Nofilia.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out extensive raids on Akyab and surrounding areas.

In Australasia. United States of America bombers raided Japanese base at Munda, New Georgia.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters escort, hit Bizerte harbour and shipping offshore. Direct hit scored on 1 vessel Attacks by fighters result in loss of 1 heavy bomber and 4 fighters. 3 enemy fighters are destroyed and others damaged. B-26 Marauder medium bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters escorts attack marshalling yard at Sousse, hitting station, roundhouse, and other buildings, tracks, and a train. Heavy antiaircraft accounts for 2 medium bombers. DB-7 Douglas Boston light bombers, with fighters escort, hit landing ground and dispersal area near Mateur and attack railroad yards in the town. P-38 Lightning fighters and P-40 fighters fly reconnaissance missions and sweeps over Tunisia and attack ground targets, including a train North of Sfax and trucks near Sainte-Marie-du-Zit. C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft continue transport missions in North West Africa.

Ninth Air Force. 93d Bomber Group, Eighth Air Force, is attached to IX Bomber Command for operations. P-40 fighters fly reconnaissance and patrol as British Eighth Army's lead division, 2d New Zealand, clashes with enemy rear guards at Nofilia. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit shipping and harbour installations at Sousse. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, under IX Bomber Command, follow with raid on same target during 18-19 December 1942.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers hit positions at Kurenada in Cape Endaiadere area where Allied ground forces launch concerted assault. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack convoy in Astrolabe Bay off Madang, while B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Alexishafen area. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields at Lae and attack the convoy off Madang and a transport North West of Lorengau.

Eleventh Air Force. A United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flies reconnaissance over Kiska, Attu, Agattu, and Semichis.
