Russian Front, Red Army pressed forward on three main fronts. Fierce street fighting in Mojaisk.

In the Mediterranean, Comiso aerodrome, Sicily; attacked by Hurricane bombers. Night attack on aerodrome at Catania, Sicily.

Far East, In Malaya, heavy fighting in Northern Johore, in the region of Batu Anam. Japanese claimed capture of Batu Pahat. In the Philippines, General MacArthur's forces beat off heavy Japanese attack in Batau peninsula. Bangkok raided by the British Royal Air Force (RAF), on night of 18-19 January 1942.

Luftwaffe aircraft dropped bombs on a Shetland island.

The British Admiralty announced the destruction, of a Dornier Do 17 bomber by destroyer HMS Walpole.

U Saw, Prime Minister of Burma, arrested for alleged complicity with Japanese.

First increment (1,400 men) of United States forces to be sent to United Kingdom sails for North Ireland.

Hawaiian Air Force. Another unsuccessful attack on enemy submarines in Hawaiian area. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers of Task group 8.9 conduct antisubmarine search from Canton Island.
