Events On This Day

United States of America Flying Fortresses and Liberators bombed submarine bases at La Pallice and Lorient. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carry out a raid on Turin and surrounding areas.

North Africa. It was announced elements of British 1st Army, British and United States of America paratroops, and French forces had entered Tunisia at several points. United States bombed airfield at Bizerta and The British Royal Air Force (RAF) attacked the aerodrome at Tunis.

Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Wellington bombers from India raided Japanese aerodromes in Burma.

Philippe Pétain gave Pierre Laval power to make laws and issue decrees.

Eighth Air Force. VIII Bomber Command conducts missions against 3 U-boat bases. 19 heavy bombers attack at La Pallice, 13 at Lorient-Keroman, and 19 at Saint-Nazaire.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters of 14th Fighter Group arrive from United Kingdom for heavy bomber escort duty. Several are damaged in enemy air raid on Maison Blanche airfield.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb marshalling yard and docks at Bengasi.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb airfields at Lae and Salamaua. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack warships 50 miles Southwest of Gasmata, 17 miles North of Buna, and between Gona and Cape Ward Hunt. B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb and strafe area between Cape Endaiadere and Buna.

Eleventh Air Force. Armed reconnaissance is flown over Kiska and Attu. No bombs are dropped.
