Events On This Day

Russian Front. Extremely fierce fighting in the North Western outskirts of Stalingrad involving the Wehrmacht forces against the Russian defenders.

In the Indian Ocean. Fresh British landing on East coast of Madagascar the British 29th East African brigade lands on the east coast, at Tamatave, without opposition, and pushes on inland towards Tananarive. The 22nd brigade is also marching on the capital from the west coast

Eighth Air Force. VIII Ground Air Support Command is redesignated VIII A Support Command.

Twelfth Air Force. 12 British units signal, observer, radar, and air warning are attached to XII Fighter Command in United Kingdom. Colonel Rosenham R Beam becomes Demanding Officer XII Ground Air Support Command.

Fifth Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bombs Salamaua while a B-25 Mitchell medium bombers strafes pack trains on Kokoda trail in Andemba, Wairopi, Kokoda area.
