WWII Timeline

Events On This Day

North Africa. Free French troops in Tunis occupied Pichon, West of Kairouan.

In Libya. Allied aircraft attacked enemy transport columns at Buerat, West of Sirte.

Russian Front. It was announced that Russian troops had launched a fresh offensive in Middle Don area, recapturing 200 different locations from the Wehrmacht ground forces.

In Burma. Allied air force bombers raided aerodrome at Toungoo.

In Australasia. United States of America dive-bombers and Flying Fortresses again attacked Japanese base at Munda, New Georgia.

Twelfth Air Force. Rain curtails operations. A-20 Havoc light bombers and DB-7 Douglas Boston light bombers, with fighters escort, hit marshalling yard at Sfax. Fighters fly routine patrol in Oran area.

Fifth Air Force.

United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Buna Mission area in which Australian forces again attacking The Triangle are halted by fierce crossfire. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack warships, transports, and cargo vessels off Madang in Astrolabe Bay and North North West of Finschhafen off coast of Huon Peninsula. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb airfields at Lae.

Eleventh Air Force. 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly reconnaissance and patrol over Amchitka and Kiska. 4 escorting P-38 Lightning fighters turn back due to weather and mechanical difficulties.

Eighth Air Force. 72 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers attack air de pot at Romilly-sur-Seine in effective raid. 6 bombers are lost to fighters.
