The British Admiralty announced sinking of destroyer HMS Vimiera after striking a nine in the Thames estuary on 9 January 1942.

Russian Front, Russians recaptured Mojaisk, removing the last direct threat to Moscow. The Wehrmacht claimed to have reoccupied Feodosia in the Crimea.

Far East, In Malaya further landings were made on the west coast by Japanese troops. It was reported from Rangoon that the enemy had occupied Tavoy in Lower Burma.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, flying out of Malang, attack shipping at Jolo.

Hawaiian Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers of Task group 8.9 fly antisubmarine mission from Canton Island.
