Events On This Day

North Africa. Tank and infantry engagements in Tunisia between British and Field Marshall Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps engagements also took place between French and German units.

Russian Front. Special communiqué announced that Russians had routed a strong Wehrmacht ground forces in the Caucasus and removed threat to Ordzhonikidze. Operation Uranus, Battle of Stalingrad, Russian forces under General Georgy Zhukov launch the Operation Uranus counter-attacks at Stalingrad, turning the tide of the battle in the Soviet Union favour.

In Australasia. The Japanese cruiser and destroyer sunk off Solomons by United States of America Flying Fortresses heavy bombers.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Blenheims bombers attacked Japanese aerodrome at Pakokku.

Eighth Air Force. Submarine yards at Vegesack, Bremen, and Kiel are added to day bombardment program as top priority objectives.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, escorted by P-38 Lightning fighters, bomb El Aouina airfield.

Eleventh Air Force. Reconnaissance aircraft over Attu and Agattu sights 2 unidentified float monoplanes East of Buldir Island.
