United States Navy Department announced that an attack had been made by surface and air units of the United States Pacific Fleet on Japanese bases in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands,

Russian Front, Red Army units made further considerable advances on the Ukraine front.

In Africa, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's spearhead reached a point 27 miles east of Barce.

Far East, From Singapore Island British batteries shelled Japanese positions and supply roads on the mainland unceasingly, In the Philippines, a Japanese force at Ternate, assembling for an attack on Corregidor, was wiped out by the heavy guns of the fortress.

In Burma, British took up new positions along the western bank of the Salween River. Japanese parties which landed at Amboyna on 31 January 1942 reached the vicinity of the aerodrome.

Vidkun Quisling made puppet Prime Minister of Norway by the Third Reich.

Eighth Air Force. VIII Bomber Command is activated at Langley Field and VIII Interceptor Command at Selfridge Field.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters from Bataan bomb and strafe landing barges off Quinauan Point during 1-2 February 1942. These strikes, in conjunction with naval and field artillery fire, cause considerable damage and casualties but fail to prevent the landings which take place South of the point, although the attempt to reinforce troops already on the point is thwarted.
