Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carried out extensive night raids on Saarbrücken. The Soviet a force carried out large-scale raids on Warsaw.

Russian Front. Defenders of Stalingrad made further withdrawal south of city. The Wehrmacht forces to North West, East of River Don, almost encircled. The Wehrmacht claimed capture of Anapa, on Black Sea.

In Africa. Infantry attack in central sector repulsed. Field Marshall Erwin Rommel's Panzers made headway in the south.

In Australasia. Fierce jungle fighting at Kokoda, Papua.

The Luftwaffe carried out major daylight attacks on Southeast coastal town. Luftwaffe night raiders bombed towns in Northeast England.

Major-General G. R. Pearke, V.C., commanding 1st Canadian Division appointed General Officer Commander-In-Chief Pacific Command.

Togo, Japanese Foreign Minister, resigned. The post was taken over by Premier Tojo.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack harbour at Candia, Crete, scoring several direct hits on 1 vessel and hitting 2 others. 2 squadrons of 57th Fighter Group fly escort missions and sweeps with Air Force. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, in conjunction with The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Lancaster heavy bombers, hit trucks and tanks in battle area of Alam-el-Halfa.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters hit Japanese Headquarters at Wagga Wagga on Milne Bay while P-400 fighters strafe Kokoda and Kokoda Pass in the Owen Stanley Range. Australian ground forces continue slow retreat over the range but make progress in Milne Bay offensive.

Eleventh Air Force. United States forces complete occupation of Adak.
