Events On This Day

Nearly 500 fighters engaged in an offensive sweep over Northern France while United States of America Flying Fortresses heavy bombers carried out bombing raids on the railway yards at Amiens.

Russian Front. Fighting continued Southeast Piatigorsk and south of Krasnodar in Caucasus , and on Stalingrad front round Kotelnikovo and Kletskaya.

In Africa. South African Air Force bombers carried out an intensive raid Tobruk.

In Australasia. The Australian Admiralty announced the loss of HMAS Canberra (D33) on 9 August 1942 by the Japanese in Solomon Islands. Action Japanese unit of 700 men which landed in the Solomons was wiped out by United States of America Marines.

Eighth Air Force. Principle of coordinated day and night bombing receive its first formal definition in Joint British and American Directive on Day Bomber Operations involving Fighter Cooperation. Emphasis is placed on achieving continuity in bombing offensive from United Kingdom. 11 heavy bombers attack Longeau marshalling yard at Amiens, a vital point in the traffic between France and Germany.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flies photo reconnaissance over Kiska. Patrol is flown over Shumagin Island.

Zone of Interior. Twelfth Air Force is activated at Bolling Field.
