Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced loss of the whaler HMS Cocker was sunk on 13 June 1942 after being torpedoed by S-57 and the trawler HMS Kingston Ceylonite was sunk on 15 June 1942 by a mine laid by U-701.

Russian bombers again raided Koenigsberg.

Russian Front. In the region of Voronezh the Russians captured a bridgehead.

In Africa. Patrol activity on land large-scale air attack on enemy aerodrome near Fuka. Navy again bombarded Mersa Matruh.

In China. The Japanese recaptured Wenchow.

In Burma. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers renewed their attacks on Akyab.

In Australasia. The Japanese bombers damaged aerodrome in raid on Port Moresby.

United States Army, Middle East Air Forces (USAMEAF). Hal Bomber Squadron and 9th Bomber Squadron (19 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 9 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers) are organised as 1st Provisional Group under Colonel Harry A Halverson's command at Lydda.

Tenth Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb docks and warehouses at Chinkiang on the Yangtze River. 4 escorting P-40 fighters strafe junks on the river. This is last Chine Air Task Force
(CATF) bombing raid of July 1942.

Eleventh Air Force. General Butler moves advance Headquarters to Umnak. 3 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Kiska (especially barracks) with incendiaries and demolition charges. 4 P-38 Lightning fighters try to intercept 4 fighters reported by Navy aircraft. No contact made.
