Events On This Day

Destruction of U-210 on 6 August 1942 in West Atlantic by Canadian destroyer HMCS Assiniboine announced. The British Admiralty announced the loss of the submarine HMS Urge.

Russian Front. Extremely bitter hand-to-hand fighting continued between the Wehrmacht and the Russian defenders in North West Stalingrad.

In Africa. Tobruk raided by Allied aircraft for seventh time in eight nights.

Fifth Air Force. In Owen Stanley Range, A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb and strafe troops and installations at Sangara, Arehe, and along the Popondetta-Andemba road, and P-40 fighters strafe airfields at Kokoda, bridges on trail near Wairopi, and troops at Myola, Efogi, and Kagi.

South Pacific (SOPAC). Admiral Fitch becomes Commander Aircraft South Pacific Forces (COMAIRSOPAC).
